Terms and Conditions

Eligibility and application

1. To enter the W-Icon Search, you must be resident in England or Wales aged 18 years or over and a registered member of a Women’s Institute (WI). The judging panel may ask for proof of WI membership and may exclude you at its sole discretion if you are not a WI member. WI members who are also employees of BSkyB Group company are not eligible to enter.

2. To apply you must complete an application form available on this leaflet or by downloading the form from either www.sky.com/w-icon or www.thewi.org.uk and post it to your local WI Federation (to which your WI is affiliated). Your application form must be completed by you. By entering the W-Icon Search you are confirming that the information you submit is true and does not infringe the intellectual property, privacy or any other rights of any third party.

3. Completed application forms must be received by your local WI Federation on or before Friday 15th August. Application forms will not be returned to applicants. Late, damaged, defaced, incomplete or illegible entries will be disqualified and Sky and WI accepts no liability for entries lost or delayed in the post. Proof of postage will not be accepted as proof of receipt. Unless stated otherwise each eligible entry will be automatically entered into the W-Icon Search. Entries must not be sent in through agents or third parties.

4. Only one application per WI member will be accepted.

Selection process

5. Every applicant who submits a complete and valid application will be considered by their respective WI Federation. This will be known as the Stage 1. Each WI Federation will then nominate one member based on which candidate they believe is most suitable, to go forward to Stage 2. Once the National Federation of Women’s Institutes Board has received all entries from local WI Federations a shortlist of 10 contestants will be selected, based on which candidates they believe are most suitable. This will be known as Stage 2.

6. In Stage 3 (late August to mid September 2008) the shortlist will be published in local and national newspapers and online to give the public the chance to vote. The top ten finalists will be asked to film a piece to camera explaining why they should be the W-Icon. The public will be able to vote online. During publicity for stage 3, the top ten finalists will be compensated for reasonable travel costs to and from the promotional locations, plus reasonable subsistence costs, to be communicated by Sky and the WI.

7. In Stage 4 (mid September 2008) the results of the public vote will be considered by the judging panel who will meet to pick one winner. The winner of the public vote will be taken into consideration but the judging panel will make the final decision.

8. The winner will be informed no later than Wednesday 24 September 2008. The winner must be available for publicity connected with winning the W-Icon Search from Wednesday 24 September until 1 November 2008.

9. In addition to being named “W-Icon 2008”, the winner will also win the opportunity to donate £10,000 to a community based project of their choice (to be approved by the judging panel). During publicity for winning the W-Icon search the ultimate winner will be compensated for reasonable travel costs to and from the promotional location, plus reasonable subsistence costs, to be communicated by Sky and the WI. The winner will also be required to take part in filming to front a series of online video based ‘How To Guides’ that will be available on www.sky.com/w-icon. Sky will own the original showreel including all copyright and other rights, title and interest in it.

10. There is no cash alternative to the prize (or any part of it) and unless agreed otherwise in writing the prize is non-refundable and non transferable.

11. Sky reserves the right to substitute the prizes (or any part of it) for a prize of equivalent or greater monetary value if this is necessary for reasons beyond its control.

12. Except in the case of death or personal injury arising from its negligence or in respect of fraud and so far as is permitted by law, Sky, its associated companies and agents and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes exclude responsibility and all liabilities arising from any postponement, cancellation, delay or changes to the prize details beyond their control and for any act or default of any other third party supplier.

13. You agree to make yourself available for publicity photographs and interviews at stages 3 and 4 of the W-Icon Search and post the W-Icon Search. You agree that such interviews and photographs can be broadcast or published internally or externally by Sky in connection with the W-Icon Search and at any time in the future.

14. By entering you consent to being filmed at stages 3 and 4. The film can be edited and broadcast by or on behalf of Sky. In particular, you agree that copyright (if any) and all other rights, title and interest in the film shall vest in Sky. You also agree to waive all moral rights (if any) that you may have in the material produced as a result of the W-Icon Search. Sky shall have the unfettered right to deal with any material containing such contribution or any part of it in any way it chooses and may exhibit or otherwise exploit such contribution or part of it in any media or format for the full period of copyright and without acknowledgement to you. You agree to enter into any further documentation that Sky considers necessary for it to secure any such right, title or interest.
